Vanitas

Really getting to like depicting skulls a lot more. There is an enjoyment with the structure of something so simple and well known, yet universally defined and crafted in so many unique ways. Vanitas refers to the old paintings from 16th and 17th century Netherlands. Skulls were often included in still life set-ups as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the futility of the pursuits of pleasure in comparison to the grim permanence of death. Still, we may be mortal, but we can smile while it lasts.
